Sanatana Dharma or Vaidika Dharma (commonly referred to as Hinduism) represents a living synthesis of the most diverse religious knowledge and its realization, based on the revelation of God, on the direct experience of the manifestation of the divine in countless different forms, as well as the formless transcendental principle. Hinduism is eternal, it has no identifiable beginning in history, it has no single founder or a central religious establishment that exerts authority, it has no sole authoritative scripture, and it doesnot encourage religious conversions.
Hinduism is also a style of living which is in line with the eternal spiritual ethical and moral laws, as taught in the holy scriptures, especially the Shrutis (Vedas with the Upanischads), Smritis (Dharma Shastras and Vishnu Purana), Itihasas (Mahabharata and Ramayana) as well as the Sutras, Puranas, Agamas and Darshanas (Nyaya, Vaisheshika, Sankhya, Yoga, Mimamsa and Vedanta).
Hinduism is not dogmatic, it is universal; respects the freedom of conscience of each individual, accepts the truth in all religions and the inner unity of all human beings and living beings. It teaches a virtuous life to the principles of nonviolence, truth, purity, wisdom, non-steeling, self-control, lack of emotion, fearlessness, peacefulness, love for the creation and for all living beings, freedom of all negative qualities as hate, desire, jealousy and pride, as well as renunciation of revenge. It preaches the value of dedication, humility, charity, selfless service, willingness to make sacrifices, modesty, practical worship of the divine by ceremony (Puja) and inner contemplation (Upasana) and meditation (Dhyana), development of divine virtues, etc. It is the object of Hinduism to reach true inner freedom, Moksha, by defeat of ignorance and realization of knowledge about the Supreme, absolute inner peace, absolute inner happiness, unity with the truth, the divine and self realization.
